Thermoplastic Properties of Endodontic Gutta-percha: A Thermographic In Vitro Study
2014
Abstract Introduction Endodontic gutta-percha undergoes deformation at temperatures above 65°C. The temperature influence of heat carriers on gutta-percha cones was investigated in vitro. Methods Six single-rooted extracted teeth were embedded in resin and fixed. The root canals were prepared (ProFile; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaiques, Switzerland) to different tapers and bisected. Thermographic images when heating the gutta-percha cones (Roeko, Langenau, Germany) with a heat carrier (ML .12; SybronEndo, Orange, CA) at 1 and 5 mm from the working length were made with an infrared thermal imaging camera (ThermaCam P640; Flir Systems, Taby, Sweden). The device temperature was preset at 200°C. T…
Heat capacity and thermal conductivity of multiferroics Bi1-xPrxFeO3
2019
The heat capacity and thermal conductivity of multiferroics Bi1–xPrxFeO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50) has been studied in the temperature range of 130–800 K. A slight substitution of praseodymium for bismuth is found to lead to a noticeable shift of the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature whilst the heat capacity increases. The temperature dependences of the heat capacity and thermal conductivity exhibit additional anomalies during phase transitions. The experimental results suggest that the excess heat capacity can be attributed to the Schottky effect for three-level states. The basic mechanisms of the heat transfer of phonons are highlighted and the dependence of the mean free path on temper…
Bio-based rigid high-density polyurethane foams as a structural thermal break material
2020
Abstract Sustainable development of building industry implies increasing usage of green materials. With this aim and for the intended application as a structural thermal break material, rigid high-density polyurethane foams have been manufactured using polyols derived from renewable resources - tall oil fatty acids. Thermal conductivity, compressive strength and stiffness of the foams of density ranging from ca. 100 to 680 kg/m3 have been determined. Comparison of the bio-based foams with reference foams derived from petrochemical resources demonstrated similar performance characteristics thus suggesting that bio-based foams can also serve as structural thermal break materials. Analytical m…
Establishing material hygrothermal characteristics via long-term monitoring and best-fit numerical models
2020
Numerical models of heat and moisture transfer for performance forecast of lightweight insulating assemblies require many inputs. These include exterior climate data (i.e. temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation), interior climate data or standard models, transfer coefficients, correct initial conditions, etc. Most importantly, one needs reliable material models. A material model includes porosity, density, heat capacity, but also non-constant properties, such as thermal conductivity, vapor/liquid water diffusivity, sorption curves. These are, in general, difficult to determine, and material database entries often are incomplete, or simply non-existent. However, if one performs long…
Modeling of ITER TF cooling system through 2D thermal analyses and enthalpy balance
2017
Abstract The winding pack of the ITER Toroidal Field (TF) coils is composed of 134 turns of Nb3Sn Cable in Conduit Conductor (CICCs) wound in 7 double pancakes and cooled by supercritical helium (He) at cryogenic temperature. The cooling of the Stainless Steel (SS) case supporting the winding pack is guaranteed by He circulation in 74 parallel channels. A 2D approach to compute the temperature distribution in the ITER TF winding pack is here proposed. The TF is divided in 32 poloidal segments, for each segment the corresponding 2D model is built and a thermal analysis is performed applying the corresponding nuclear heating computed with MCNP code considering the latest design updates, such …
Physical modeling of heat and moisture transfer in wet bio-sourced insulating materials.
2018
Simultaneous heat and moisture transfers in bio-sourced insulating materials are significant phenomena in thermal metrology. The present study focuses on these phenomena by experimental and numerical approaches based on the asymmetric hot-plate method. In this paper, a bio-sourced insulating material based on flax fibers is developed. The thermal and hygric properties of the sample are then investigated in the humid atmosphere. The temperature is maintained at 30 °C, and the relative humidity varies between 30% and 90% RH. A physics-based model of simultaneous heat and moisture transfer is developed for thermal conductivity estimation. This model is discretized with finite difference method…
From kinetic to collective behavior in thermal transport on semiconductors and semiconductor nanostructures
2013
We present a model which deepens into the role that normal scattering has on the thermal conductivity in semiconductor bulk, micro and nanoscale samples. Thermal conductivity as a function of the temperature undergoes a smooth transition from a kinetic to a collective regime that depends on the importance of normal scattering events. We demonstrate that in this transition, the key point to fit experimental data is changing the way to perform the average on the scattering rates. We apply the model to bulk Si with different isotopic compositions obtaining an accurate fit. Then we calculate the thermal conductivity of Si thin films and nanowires by only introducing the effective size as additi…
Two-Dimensional Carbon: A Review of Synthesis Methods, and Electronic, Optical, and Vibrational Properties of Single-Layer Graphene
2019
Graphite has been widely used by humans for a large part of their history. Nevertheless, it has only recently been possible to isolate its basic unit: carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure on a single plane, namely graphene. Since its discovery, many techniques have been developed and improved to properly synthesize graphene and its derivatives which are part of the novel class of two-dimensional materials. These advanced materials have imposed themselves in nanotechnology thanks to some outstanding physical properties due to their reduced dimensions. In the case of graphene, its reduced dimension gives rise to a high electrical mobility, a large thermal conductivity, a high mechan…

2018
The life style of building occupants is continuously arising towards conditions that are more comfortable involving, on turn, the growing of the electric energy consumptions for climatization purposes. This calls for the improvement of the efficiencies of equipment along with environmental performance of building materials. Laboratory analyses of samples of mixed materials, utilizing tomato stems harvested in Sicily and Cataluña, have been conducted Thermal conductance and mechanical properties have been detected for different rates of bio-component and inert materials. First results of the thermal properties seem to situate such bio-composites among the insulating building materials, for a…
